Non compliance, Aggression and Violence - due to disorientation, confusion or fear.
Mrs X who has dementia related challenging behaviours can become frustrated and non compliant which can often lead to aggressive and violent outbursts. Mrs X lives in a residential care home where she wanders around the building on a daily basis re-enacting her working life as a hotelier, drawing curtains and blinds, moving tables and chairs etc. These behaviours can pose a risk to Mrs X, the residents and carers as well as creating disruption and conflict. Management of Mrs X identified behaviours is complex and requires a host of skills including good communication, observation and quick thinking.

This act ensures that where a person requires an integrated approach to their care which involves many different professionals the care is delivered by means of an interdisciplinary team made up of different bodies and services in order to provide an effective plan of care. It is important to remember that workplace policy is put in place to ensure safe working practices and protection for everyone and is underpinned by and is an extension of government legislation. The Health and Safety at Work act 1974 is built into every aspect of my practices in the work place. In relation to Mrs X it ensures that the environment she lives in is safe and that she is protected from harm. In the workplace I must ensure that there are no obstacles or equipment that could pose a risk to her. This means ensuring there is no clutter ie coffee cups, sharp objects that Mrs X could get hold of. This is important as I am responsible for undertaking activities with other groups of service users and Mrs X is often wandering around at these times therefore I must ensure that I am always vigilante and that any materials I am using are used within a controlled environment and are not a hazard to her. It is also important that I discuss with any new colleuges i.e. temporary/locum staff the importance of health and safety and any potential risks in the environment including informing of the agreed approaches regarding the care, safety and well being of service users who are likely to display challenging
