Officials and school management teams are looking into developing practical proactive plans. Mr. Whitt associate vice president for public relations at Eastern Kentucky University has been working on increasing school systems crisis management plans to become proactive plans. Mr. Whitt has developed nine areas each crisis management plan should include. The first area all members of the crisis management team needs to include is the role of the district’s Superintendent. The members of the team need to understand the intention the Superintendent has for the district when it comes to communication of a crisis and who is responsible for what when a crisis arises. The second area that needs to happen is the crisis management teams needs to meet often. As a district it is important to know who everyone on the team is and what role everyone is responsible for during a crisis. The third area is based on the crisis team developing strong relations with the media. “Reports must know they can count on the crisis team to provide honest, accurate and timely information in a crisis.” (2) The forth area the crisis management team needs to include in building and sustaining good relationships with safety personnel. (3) In order for school officials to build a school where positive and trusting relationships can be made between students, teachers, parents and administrators a crisis plan should include or address schools to move from discipline policy that issue out-of-school suspensions and expulsions. “Frequent suspensions can chip away at trust between students and school staff members, the plan says. Administrators and teachers can wind up spending more time punishing students for their behavior than helping them correct it, it says, and frequent punishment can turn students off from school or contribute to their feelings of disengagement.” (3) School crisis management teams need to focus on advocating for students in need of building positive relationships. Areas will this can be done is adding school resource officers to school districts. This could allow for students to build trusting relationships with officers and also help to provide an active alert system to officers when potential crimes, or crisis are about to happen.
