In his afterword to Lord of the Flies, E.L. Epstein claims that the Lord of the Flies is “the central symbol itself” (205). Do you agree that this Beelzebub character is indeed the most significant symbol in Golding’s book? If so, why does Golding choose to include the Lord of the Flies in his novel? What function does it serve in the text? If not, what is the most important symbol in Lord of the Flies? The conch? Piggy’s glasses?

Ralph and Jack are discussing the situation about how the shelters will help from the rain. Jack then says that they need protection from the beastie which is another reason why they need the shelters. They both paused in awkward silence because of the talk about the beastie. Ralph then says, "You've noticed, haven't you...Noticed what...Well, they're frightened."(52) This obviously shows how all the kids are scared of the beastie and how it is a very big issue. It also does show how even Jack and Ralph have no control of this issue and they can’t do anything about it. The reason they can’t do anything about it is because they are afraid of the beastie themselves. And because these boys that are represented as leaders, they can’t do anything about this beastie, all the others are scared of it because it has more power than their own leaders. That truly shows the boys are afraid of this Lord of the Flies character. There are too many important themes or symbols because they each represent special and different things in the book. The different special symbols in the book are the Conch, the Lord of the Flies, and the Fire.
The Conch is a very essential symbol in Lord of the Flies, and it is important because of the fact that it shows power and order inside of the society.
The next important theme in the book is the Fire, for this symbol represents the ability to be rescued and the deterioration within the society. The last important symbol in Lord of the Flies is the character known as the Lord of the Flies, yet this symbol represents the fear and horror inside of all the boys.
Lord of the Flies connects to the real world by all of the different symbols just stated. The conch is similar to cops and the fact that they have badges. The badge represents that they have power. The fire is similar to a flair gun, it gives the sense and help of getting rescued. The Lord of the Flies character is very similar to demon like creatures, they symbolize the sense of fear.
