The Causes of Homelessness in my Community Chris and Laylah Smith has four beautiful children with another bundle of joy on the way trying their best to make ends meet on a daily basis. Chris works for the temp agency until he’s able to find something permanent and Laylah is a stay at home mom due to the cost of day care for two children. They travel on the bus due to not having any transportation of their own and no family support around to help them whenever they’re in a bind. Times are hard for the Smith family. One of the effects of homelessness is poor health conditions. Homeless individuals are more prone to diseases, such as cardio-respiratory diseases, skin diseases, and tuberculosis. The main reason for the increase in susceptibility to diseases is because homeless people do not get the proper medical attention needed. Furthermore, homeless people living in shelters are in closer contact to several other people and in turn diseases spread much quicker in such conditions. Along with diseases, homeless individuals suffer from nutritional deficiencies and sleep deprivation. It is hard for a homeless person to eat and sleep peacefully because they don’t know where their next meal will come from nor where they will be sleeping for the night. Being homeless is nothing to just sit and play around with because it’s real. When a family lacks a physical home or roof over their head, they are considered as being homeless. When a family can’t afford the basic needs of life to survive, then they are living in poverty. Never take life for granted and think that being homeless can never happen to your family. The causes of homelessness can in some way be prevented as long as a person can keep a steady job but in reality, jobs are not always reliable. The effects of homelessness can be hard on the community, cause poor health conditions, and affect a person psychologically and personally. Through all of these causes and effects, there are great programs that can and will assist in every way they can to help a family/person overcome
