Worldwide there are 121million children out of education (Shah). Like previously stated poor children are more likely to drop out of school or be retained due to the fact that they score lower grades on standardized tests. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, in 2008 the dropout rate of students living in low- income families was 8.7%, about four and one-half times greater than the rate of children from higher-income families which was 2% ("Effects of Poverty, Hunger and Homelessness on Children and Youth"). It is thought that low rates of high school completion is more predictive with low income during the preschool and early school years than compared to low income during later childhood and adolescence (University, Princeton). This being said poverty during early childhood have very unfavorable effects on the academic outcomes of children later on in life. One of the reasons that children living in poverty do so poorly in school can be blamed on chronic stress which is associated with living in poverty. It has been shown to negatively affect a child’s concentration and memory which can then impact their ability to learn ("Effects of Poverty, Hunger and Homelessness on Children and Youth"). There are many factors that endanger their survival on a daily basis. First of all there are about 2.2 billion children in the world. Of those 2.2 billion, 1 billion are living in poverty every second. For the 1.9 billion children from the developing world that is 1 in 3, there are 640 million without adequate shelter that is 1 in 5, 400 million with no access to safe water, and 270 with no access to health services that is 1 in 7. For those with lack of access to safe drinking water, 1.4 million die each year. In 2003, 10.6 million children died worldwide before they even reached the age of 5. That is the same as the child population in France, Germany, Greece, and Italy (Shah). The World Health Organization has stated that the world’s biggest killer and the greatest cause of ill health and suffering across the globe is poverty
