Isolating Himself from Society:
Depressed people often isolate themselves because they do not want to face the strain of social contact.“I was standing way the hell up on top of Thomsen Hill, right next to this crazy cannon that was in the Revolutionary War and all. You could see the whole field from there...practically the whole school except me was there” (Salinger 2) In this quote Holden is isolating himself from everyone because he does not want to deal with everyone, who he thinks are fake.
Smoking:
“I ignored him. I really did. I went right on smoking like a madman”(42). This shows that due to depression Holden created an addiction, in this case, to cigarettes. Drinking:

In this Holden becomes angered at Stradlater and becomes violent, trying to punch Stradlater. Holden also had no real good reason behind the act. Suicidal Thoughts:
People with depression often have lots of thoughts of suicide. “What I really felt like, though, was committing suicide. I felt like jumping out the window. I probably would've done it, too, if I'd been sure somebody'd cover me up as soon as I landed”(113). Holden begins to think about committing suicide out of nowhere, which is common with depression.
Constant Grieving:
Grieving can often be a symptom or cause cause of depression. Be usually grieve after the death of a loved one and this can lead to depression if one is not able to properly cope with the loss. “What I did, I started talking, sort of out loud, to Allie. I do that sometimes when I get very depressed”(98). Holden is still grieving the loss of his brother even though it has been years since his
