1. Outline the facts that surround the kidnapping and murdering of Aldo Moro?
In early March 1978, the the former Italian Prime Minister Aldo Moro proposed a parliament consisting of the Christian Democrats and the Socialist Party with the support of the Italian Communist Party. It was an attempt to integrate the rising socialists into the government system and was called the “Historic Compromise”. The right-wing terrorist group, the Red Brigades, whose main aim was to force Italy to leave the NATO alliance, was also opposed to the “Historic Compromise”. The Italian press reported that Moro might have taken bribes during his time involved in dealing with international disputes. The accusation was aimed at politically destroying him and his push to form a “Historic Compromise” cabinet.
2. What evidence is there of a conspiracy between various groups inside and outside of Italy to prevent the Historic Compromise and remove Aldo Moro as a political threat? The main evidence centres on a documentary “The Last Days of Aldo Moro in which a former member of the US State Department is alleged to have said, “We had to sacrifice Aldo Moro to maintain the stability of Italy”. (Refer Emmanuel Amara, Les derniers jours d’Aldo Moro (The Last Days of Aldo Moro), Interview of Steve Pieczenik put on-line by Rue 89). It is alleged that they had to use the Red Brigades when Moro started to reveal state secrets through his letters.
