While symptoms vary significantly from person to person, all those affected struggle to be accepted. Symptoms range from failure to respond when their name is called, resisting physical affection and making poor eye contact or lack of facial expressions to being unable to speak, understand simple direction or being unable to express emotions. ( mayo clinic.) A person affected with Autism may be resistant to change and develop specific routines and patterns. They can become very frustrated and agitated if their routines are disrupted. They may also have to be moving constantly and can develop repetitive movements such as rocking or even as severe has head banging. They may even have problem with coordination and frequently stumble or trip and hurt themselves. One reason the articles state is that they feel Autism Speaks doesn 't help older children or adults with autism as much as it helps young children. I am sure people would feel differently. if there were more donations and more money going into Autism Speaks to generate awareness, research and focus on the aging Autistic population, not just young people.
