Caring is a central component of nursing practice (Burtson & Stichler, 2010). Research on the concept of caring in nursing has shown that there is a strong correlation between caring and patient satisfaction (Burtson & Stichler, 2010). Furthermore, a lack of caring can have devastating consequences such as suffering, or even death due to negligence (Oosthuizen & Devente, 2010). Because caring is such an important aspect of quality care, nurses should maintain trusting, therapeutic relationships with patients to promote holistic healing (Oosthuizen & Devente, 2010). This paper will provide a caring perspective on the case study of Luis Sandoval.
Therapeutic Nurse-Patient Relationships
Defining the nurse-patient …show more content…
Sandoval, the nurse should apply several strategies for caring. The first is determining the patients concerns for surgery, and ensuring that enough education is given to meet the standards of nursing practice (American Nurses Association, 2015). The second is ensuring that the patient’s desires and outcomes are met to the highest degree possible (American Nurses Association, 2015). In Mr. Sandoval’s case this includes preserving the leg after surgery, and making the necessary arrangements to transport the extremity to the patient’s home. Applying a nursing theory may help guide the nurse in providing high-quality care. Leininger’s Theory of Transcultural Care can be applied to show how a nurse’s knowledge and understanding of different cultures can improve patient outcomes (Fawcett, 2002). The nurse can apply Leininger’s Transcultural Theory to Mr. Sandoval’s case by being aware of the significance of the burial of a limb, and making respectful inquires to gain a better understanding of the patient’s culture (Fawcett, 2002).
Conclusion
Mr. Sandoval’s case provides an excellent example of the ways that caring in nursing practice can be demonstrated. Because of Mr. Sandoval’s unique request, the nurse has the opportunity to know the patient well and provide care that is culturally sensitive. Professional nurses must always remember to place the patient at the center of care, regardless of the patient’s culture or illness (American Nurses Association, 2015). In doing so nurses will be able to care deeply and help the patient achieve the highest degree of healing and wellness
