For example, Tyler Joseph wrote the lyrics, “Faith is to be awake/ And to be awake is for us to think/ And for us to think is to be alive.” This is compelling because it sets a precedence for the importance of thought. Joseph sets this by making it appear as a rational progression of thought and breaking up his point in order to propose thought as something that is imperative to fully live. This argument is strengthened by comparing thought to other known powerful concepts such as consciousness, life, and faith. This section in particular is sung with a great sense of urgency which conveys a sense of importance from Joseph. Joseph crafts this sense of urgency through the speed and staccato of his delivery. In addition, the urgent vocals combined with the poignant words produce a sense of sincerity and need to both Joseph and the audience. The personal yet bold lyrics drop the figurative language used in other parts of the song such as, “My skin will scream reminding me of/ Who I killed inside my dream.” While lyrics such as those succeed in creating an image in one’s mind their meaning can be lost in translation. However, it does act as a contrast to other, more direct, sections of “Car Radio.” By building on this contrast twenty one pilots create an effective appeal to
