In the beginning of this story, Candy’s disability makes him very lonely. He can’t work like the others work because he only has one hand. He is an old guy which also makes it a little harder to work like the others. “The old man came slowly into the room. He had his broom in his hand. And at his heels there walked a drag footed sheep dog, gray of muzzle, and with pale, blind old eyes. The dog struggled lamely to the side of the room and lay down, grunting softly to himself and licking his grizzled, moth eaten coat. The swamper watched him until he was settled. ‘I wasn’t listenin’. I was jus’ standin’ in the shade a minute scratchin’ my dog. I jus’ now finished swampin’ out the wash house’” (Steinbeck 24). Also by the way Candy said that he wasn’t listening as soon as George saw him makes it seem like he doesn’t want trouble and he seemed kind of scared of George. When George was being nice to Candy, he seemed kind of happy in a way because he kept talking to George about Curley and his wife and how she always talked to all the guys around. “You won’t tell Curley nothing I said?” (Steinbeck 28). Candy is talking to George like they known each other or a while. Candy has a lot in trust in George from him not being there nothing but a day. “I don’t know nothing that stinks as bad as an old dog. You gotta get him out,” says Carlson (Steinbeck 44). Candy doesn’t know that his dog stinks but Candy’s dog means so much to him and would be so upset if anything ever happened to his dog, because his dog has been around him ever since he was a puppy. I think that Candy doesn’t want to let go to his dog because he doesn’t really have anyone to talk to. Candy likes the feeling of his dog being beside him and knowing that his dog is not going to leave his side. “Aint
