Tropic of Cancer get its name from this constellation because of its line of most northern latitude. Without the use of a telescope this constellation seems like a cloudy patch of light, but when the proper equipment is used it shows the grouping of hundreds of starts together. There is only one meteor shower associated with Cancer and that is Delta Cancroids. The most salient feature is the beehive cluster with the Messier 44 and it shows to be about 600 light years away. The stars of the beehive were all created at the same time, which can be deducted that their life year span is about 600-700 million years or 4 billion years younger than the sun. Cancer’s major stars include Acubens-Alpha, Al tarf-Beta, Asellus Australis-Delta, Asellus Borealis-Gamma, and Iota Cancri. Acubens is a white color star with about 174 light years away from planet Earth and its Arabic for “claws”. One of the most luminous stars in this cluster is the Al tarf and is an orange star of about 500 times bigger than the sun in diameter and it translates to “the end”. Asellus Australis has an orange-yellow color and about 181 light years away from Earth and its translation is “southern donkey”. Asellus Borealis is blue-white in color and 131 light years away, “northern donkey”, this two stars were thought to be Dionysus and Silenus donkeys that they rode into the battle of …show more content…
The goddess Hera swore to kill Hercules when he killed his wife and children in an angry state of his. It was said that when he awoke from a temporary insane state, he was shocked by what he had done and went to pray to Apollo, the god of healing, and Apollo acknowledges the prays to tell him he has to serve Eurystheus for twelve years in punishment for the murders. He was sentenced to do difficult tasks, but when he really needed a help Hermes and Athena showed up to rescue him. In one of the many versions shared through history, Hercules was battling Hydra, the multi-headed monster, as his second labor. The goddess Hera sent a giant crab to distract the divine hero, but he ends up crushing it into pieces, Hera decides to place the remaining parts up in the sky, giving it only faint stars to show its failure. The faint stars show how this constellation plays only a relatively small part in the whole universe. Another myth states that Hera swore to kill Hercules and makes him go through the twelve labors and Hera sends a crab to distract him while he is fighting the Lernaen Hydra, when the crab gets to Hercules and attempts to kill him, Hercules kicks it all the way up to the stars. The last myth I found was instead of Hera, it was Juno, who sent Cancer the Crab to distract Hercules from his task, and Juno placed Cancer in the sky to reward his service. By the end of these
