Clemmitts points out, “Because of social networks, privacy is no longer a social norm” (83). Users view privacy differently they share more information with a larger amount of people. This leaves users vulnerable to political and marketing abuse. However, because individuals are able to communicate to those they normally wouldn’t be able to with the ease of technology some feel justified in the new privacy norms. Users of technology and social media give up privacy or at least what once was describe as privacy as they share their lives online through messages and pictures posted on social media sites, blogs, and other forms of communication. This has become the new normal. Turkle states, “People have become gratified by a certain public exposure; it is more validation that Violation” (509). Subsequently, as individual connect with others through social media sights, Turkle worries that individual’s will be, “Connecting globally but relating parochially” (509). However, Clemmitt acknowledges the opportunities of community involvement using social media as it, “Provides new ways for people to turn their interest into deeper involvement” (85). Users are able to connect on a large scale to others, enriching their lives. The web or network connects them to friends and then to friends of friends. Users are able to join special interest group, or connect with activist, and then utilize the social network to influence others to join and get involved. This creates a community that takes an active role and involvement in community and political affairs. This has become the new way of social interaction. There is a convenience to this form of interaction, as someone who wouldn’t normally get involved or is unable to physically now has the ability to.
