As the Black Death became worse, merchants and shop owners close up due to panic. Because of this, the people we left without any shops to purchase supplies from and work from. Trading became slower until finally coming to a stop. Without imports or exports, the countries were not making enough money to self support the people and their needs to find resources, so the people took it into their own hands. As stated by Leonard Cowie, “People took advantage of the confusion and distress to rob the survivors and pillage the homes of victims.” The families were desperate to provide for their family and that the only choice left was to steal from others that were just as needy as them. In addition, due to the loss of clergy members, nobles and those who were working in the third class that were dropping in thousands could not provide help for the ones who were suffering, there was no way out. The people of Europe were stuck in an age of poverty. While some may believe that only the third class were suffering from this time of lack of money and resources, it was the upper classes as well and effects the society as a whole. As seen in the architecture and the art of the medical ages, it was a depressing and confusing time for the people, watching their love ones die so fast. As stated in the article “Illuminated manuscripts often portray strange or confusing imagery” Many of the paintings seemed to be unhuman like creatures, monsters and even used dark colors. These pictures displayed their current struggles. When the Black Death had faded out, the Renaissance started, and it is seen as a brighter and more modernized time. Compared to the architecture during both eras, they resemble two different emotions, the medieval sticks with its deep and dark theme while the Renaissance had brighter more vibrant colors shown.
