Throughout the entire film there is none not on going violence from murder, robbery, gambling, selling drugs, to petty theft. Many may argue that the amount of violence and crime showed in this film is mispresented and does not happen on a day to day base. But the fact is that crimes of this nature do happen in low income neighborhoods on a regular. Ninety-Five percent of the crimes in the film are caused by June, and as a consequence not only does his family but his community suffer from his decisions. Within the hour and thirty minute movie, one person is shot, six people are killed, one robbery and a home invasion are committed. Functionalism is the idea that society works as a whole and has interrelated parts. In other words everything or one has a way of effecting something else whether it be positive or negative. In Chris’s case it is very ludicrous how he finds himself being fictional proof of the functionalism theory. Just after he explain to Jackie that someone has to commit crimes in order for private prisons to make money, he sends himself to the same money hungry prisons. The entire plot of the Brotherly Love can be considered as a latent function. According to Professor Nia Reed a latent function is “Factors that lead to an unforeseen or unexpected consequence.” June lived his life never thinking that one day his decisions and consequence would never catch up to him.
