In the Communist Manifesto, Marx describes how Capitalism has increasing dominance of the proletariat and the bourgeoisie classes, the two major contending classes. He states that old classes, such as the small tradespeople, shopkeepers, retired tradesmen, handicraftsmen, and peasants all gradually are pushed into becoming the proletariat. This is mostly because their small wealth cannot serve for the scale on which the other bigger businesses have. This smaller wealth population lags behind the competition with the large capitalists because their specialized skill is rendered worthless by new methods of production. In other words they cannot adapt to the fast pace of innovation. In the end, all the old classes of the population head over to the proletariat. These older classes sink into the proletariat mostly because they lack sufficient capital, but also because technology has rendered their specialized skills no longer useful. In both his day and today Marx was correct in his viewpoints. In his day, those who could not keep up with the current market would join the working force, being forced to work just to make a living. In the 20th century this is still happening, greater numbers of people are forced to sell their labor power in order to make a living.
