The Civil war was of great significance in the bolshevik consolidation of power in the period 1917-1924.
In the period of the Civil war the Bolsheviks implemented various tough laws inevitably increasing and maintaining bolshevik control and power. During the civil war It was through the introduction of War communism, red terror, new economic policy, treaty of brest-Litovsk, initial reforms and also lenin’s great leadership the bolsheviks consolidated their authority.
The Civil war was caused by discontent. Some resented the closure of the constituent assembly and the growing severity of the Bolshevik regime. Kadets and right socialist revolutionaries were angry having lost their livelihood. These were made up of intelligentsia and middle class. This concluded the promise to the proletariat peace. After Lenin had returned to Russia the 'decree of peace' was issued by the government. This meant that Russia would have immediate peace, negotiations began on the 22nd of December. Germany had presented their demands in order for a peace agreement to occur. The demands Germany requested were really harsh. Trotsky (commissar of foreign affairs) had refused to sign on the 10th of February and The Germans continued their offensive into Russian territory. Later on the treaty was signed on the 3rd of march with severe harsh terms. As a result Russia had lost 30% of its population, 32% of its agricultural land, 85% of its sugar beet land and 54% of its industrial undertakings, including 89% of its coal mines.
