The author believes direct remarks made about adolescent’s bodies from parents and siblings can cause girls to question their looks and generate negative feelings (Loewen). Parents can also compare their kids to other kids and often their siblings (“you should be skinny like your sister”). Hurtful comments made about a girl’s image or weight can remain for a lifetime.
The enormous pressure from friends play a role in body image disturbances as they would feel their bodies should look a certain way. It is stated that ideal body image occurs through discussions among their friends, “as children get older, the influence of family declines and the influence of friends increases” (Loewen, 7). Talks about being “fat” is an expression for girls to “express their anxieties over being preventing, or overcoming "fat" (Loewen, 5). The Role of Identification in Adolescent Girls’ Media Consumption and the Impact of Different Thin- Ideal Media on Body Image”. It is questioned which type of media causes girls to be more insecure. Media images can be found in magazines on billboards, commercials and ads. After producing their own research, they found that magazines out of all the media images cause girls to develop low self-esteem, “magazine use was more strongly associated with body dissatisfaction than TV use” (Bell and Dittmar, 481). It is stated in their research that media has evolved; rapid growth of new forms of technology would give access of media images to adolescents, “The mass media is constantly changing and evolving, over the last 20 years, different media have emerged, such as music videos, computer games, and the Internet, whose use has grown at alarming rates” (Ziegler, Bell and Dittmar,
