This paper is a preliminary community project plan that has been prepared by Master of Social Work students at the University of South Carolina for Westwood High School garden. Working closely with the project stakeholders, the authors of this project plan will undertake the steps and actions outlined in this plan to come up with a final community project paper with findings and recommendations that will be presented to the stakeholders.
Scope/Summary of issue to be addressed Children from low socio-economic status are not receiving adequate nutrition in their daily diets. Michael Ross, as well as the students currently attending Westwood High School. In speaking with Mayor Ross, we discussed possible ways to get not only his office involved with the garden at Westwood, but also the general public. We collectively discussed possible events and strategies that may encourage more participation from the Blythewood community. In addition, we discussed what Mayor Ross could do individually in order to raise awareness in transforming the student-led garden into a community space. Two of the ideas discussed were Mayor Ross attending garden-related events and issuing letters of support when needed for grant approval. Moreover, while the meeting has not yet occurred, we are in the process of contacting an assisted living facility to see if they would be interested in volunteering in the garden to truly make it a community
