Due to a recession or competition between weapon manufacturers, the price war will impact the barrel lapping and may leave burrs on the rifling. This is where Fire lapping with abrasive bullets play a great role and may be the best way to remove burrs. Products such as the Wheeler Bore Lapping Kit or Final Finish provides; increase velocity, a reduction in copper and lead fouling and increases the accuracy of the rifle. Although, there are multiple problems that can manifest on the barrel such as; stress reaction, having a custom barrel will mean having more control over the result.
Barrels can also be purchased by grade, such as; match or ultra-match. The difference is the finish of the bore and accuracy. In the end the shooter has full control over their rifle results. Using match grade ammunition, fire one shot. After shooting one shot, adjust on the elevation and windage turret and clean once again with a; brush, solvent and then a dry patch. Repeat this process for a total of 5 shots. The remaining breaking in period should be conducted using 5 shot groups and cleaning after every group.
Some shooters claim 20, 50 or even 60 rounds for a break in, it’s all about who is been asked. When cleaning the goal is to measure how many dry patches is needed to clean the bore. There should be a noticeable decline in the number of patches used. If solvent fails to work, an abrasive paste such as JB’s or Autosol may be used.
In conclusion; when breaking in the barrel, it’s largely based on who you ask for advice. Everyone’s process is a little different and one major factor is the grade of barrel purchased. My breaking in process was extremely short due to buying a well-known and proven rifle. Some rifles will need more attention, based on the level of workmanship that went into its
