In the early 20 century, people took up whaling for the energy sources, and the meat and fat of whales can be used in different ways. Since the price of whale meat is really high, many people regard the profit as the chief motivation, caring less about the ecological system. There were about 66000 whales being killed during a hunting season in 1961 and till the International Whaling Commission (IWC) banned whaling, the number of whales has decreased 99% of it’s total population.

The fat, the meat, the viscus and even the bones can be use in various of ways. Japan even achieved the goal making use of every parts of a whale: the meat once became the main food in school, the fats can be used to produce various goods, broken viscus can feed animals and aftern grind into powder, and bones is a good fertilizer as well. Another idea is some countries started whaling for long period of time, and whaling becoming one of the nation culture, Danmark even have The Whaling Day every year, in addition, in some developing countries, whaling is considered to be an essential part of the economics.
IWC was set up by America, setting up 16000 BWU as a limit for ever county for Whaling (BWU is an unit stand for how many blubber people can get from one Blue While), the numbers of different whales decrease at a huge rate. To avoid species extinction, IWC lower the limitation and countries who whaling only for blubber quit since it do not benefit.
