“Are you Patrick from Maryland,” asked a girl in the middle of the section who I later learned was Julia.
“That’s me,” I replied eagerly as I took the empty seat next to Keenan. He was the only person in the band I recognised, as he had been in my cabin last summer. Keenan was, in all regards, very average. His defining characteristics were his thin frame, and small wiry glasses.

Since Keenan spoke 3 languages other than English, I had no doubt he was going to get in. I was the wild card. Luckily, I was accepted because of a superb counselor recommendation. Since I lived so far away from the camp, which is in Michigan, I did not attend the first two rehearsals because they were only a few hours long. That led to, as Julia told me, playful theories within the trumpet section about who I was and whether or not I was going to show up. Once the rehearsal ended, I was most surprised by the openness of everyone. There was not a single person in the band who failed to try to strike up conversation with people around them.
