Before the march, some things, such as disturbances within the city, happened to cause it. One thing that happened, for example, is that Martin Luther King was put in jail. One major goal was to desegregate Birmingham. In the 1960’s, Birmingham was the most segregated city, meaning that the city had separated blacks from whites in almost everything. There were schools for black children that were discrete from the all white schools, there were even different busses for blacks and whites during a small time period. The SCLC wanted to desegregate Birmingham to make it a better place for everyone to have a good life in. Another goal of the march was to get people, mostly black people, out of jail if they were in jail for doing nothing wrong. During the march, James Bevel, the leader of the SCLC, tried to negotiate a solution with the city and the government to end all of the segregation in Birmingham. Most people in the city had supported the march because they wanted a better life for themselves and everyone around them. There would have been no “I Have A Dream” speech if this march had not happened, because the SCLC had proven a point and got Martin Luther King and others out of jail by putting more people in jail (Daily Beast). Desegregation would not have been possible if the leader of the SCLC had not negotiated with the Birmingham city council about civil rights and how Birmingham needed equality in the city. Since the march had proven a huge point about segregation, the civil rights act of 1964 was made mostly because of this march(Biography). Some outcomes directly after the arch were both positive and negative. One positive thing that had happened after the march was that the city had desegregated. This meant this city had become more equal as one. One negative outcome of the march was that the KKK bombed the 16th baptist church, and killed four young girls. Another negative thing that happened was that most students who participated in the march were expelled from school.
