In the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, the term monstrous is blurred and is used to describe a broad range of characters including Victor Frankenstein and the Creature. Delving further into the book, the Creature is investigated, and it is clear that his appearance and his actions bring out the monstrous side of him.

The first of the four, is when the Creature was in the woods and came across a young boy named William. The creature did not intend to hurt young William but rather make a companion of him. When the young boy saw the Creature he began screaming calling the Creature an ugly monster. The young boy then said that his father was M. Frankenstein and when the Creature heard this he strangled young William. “Frankenstein! Once the creature kills William, he then plots his second murder of Justine Moritz, the kind servant for the Frankenstein family. Justine was framed by the creature. While Justine was out looking for William the Creature placed a picture that William had on him, in Justine’s pocket knowing that she would be accused of the murder. Justine was sentenced to death when she was found with the picture in her pocket. The murder of Justine is now the second killing of someone close to Victor Frankenstein caused by the creature. The third murder is when the creature kills Victors best friend Henry Clerval. All of the killings were out of spite and an act of revenge although this one was a very important murder. Victor Frankenstein and Henry Clerval were best friends. If the creature can’t have a best friend then why should his creator be able to have friends and family? The fourth and final murder was of Victors wife on his wedding night. By the creature killing those who were close to Victor, the creature creates an environment for Victor similar to the environment in which he lives. The creature lives in a lonely and sad world and that is the world that he makes for victor by killing those who are close to
