When we go into what really is characterized under an emotional or behavioral disorder, the federal definition breaks it down into different portions that Gargiulo shows in the textbook. The federal definition explains that an emotional or behavioral disorder (E/BD) is “a condition exhibiting one or more of the following characteristics over a long period of time and to a marked degree that adversely affects a child’s educational performance” and go into the characteristics that include “the inability to learn not explained by other factors, inability to have interpersonal peer and teachers relationships, inappropriate feelings or behaviors under normal circumstances, pervasive mood of depression or unhappiness, and tendencies to develop physical symptoms or fears” so that all aspects of E/BD can be known (Gargiulo, 2014). Some can get confused with characteristics with schizophrenia and autism, and wonder if they are completely different or are similar. Today, we have more information and research for E/BD to have a better understanding of the disorder and how we can provide support that E/BD children need to reach their academic goals. There is still a long way to go for students getting the absolute best approach towards getting the need that they must have, but these factors that educators can obtain will ease the child’s anxiety and stress in their academic
