Each time an examination is done, there are steps to achieve to equip the examination room for the next appointment. Once an examination, such as a pap smear is accomplished, the vagina speculum is put into a biohazard bucket, then taken to the biohazard room to get cleaned, and place into another bucket where is it shipped off to STMC center for sterilization. Next you dispose the broom, and cytobrush into the biohazard trash can. These two tools were used to remove the cells from the cervix to send for testing. Placing the dirty lining into the lining basket to later be taken to SRMC. Once all the materials are discarded into their correct location, the nursing student was able to wipe the room down. The nursing student wiped down the bed, chair, and counter tops in the room. To get ready for the next examination depends on the procedure being done. However; the common things that the nursing student repaired in the examination room with was a bed cover, liquid cytology, jumbo swab, broom and cytobrush. At banner Women’s Health clinical, they are not capable of doing blood draws, however they are able to provide paper work to the patient on what blood work to obtain such as ABO/RH type, antibody screen, CBC, HIV, RPR reflex titer, Rubella, Varicella, A1C and TSH. During this clinical rotation, the preventative health care practiced on a regular basis to a patient, was to provide breastfeeding support, folic acid prescriptions, gestational diabetes screening, gonorrhea screening, chlamydia screening, urinary infection or other infection in the urine tract and group B cluster. Most of this preventative health care are done though the urine and are sent off for further testing. This location also offers routine vaccinations, and blood pressure monitoring. Pap smears are a very imporatant preventative health care practiced on a regular basis at this location. This produce is down at the age 21 and every year after. When becoming pregnant, you will receive a pap smear at your first OB appointment and then again at your 6-week post checkup.
