The role of management in motivating staff members in Avenue Mould
Background:
I have worked for the company Avenue Mould for the past 21 years. Starting as an apprentice mouldmaker, progressing to a senior mouldmaker, before moving into management 6 years ago.
During the fifteen years leading up to promotion to quality manager I have endured periods where I felt quite unmotivated, I’m sure I’m not the only employee who has felt this way also. On the other hand, over the last 6 years while managing I have felt great frustration at the lack of motivation shown by staff members at times.
As part of the management team, I envisage our company as one where all staff members are motivated and ready to work.

There are two specific types of motivation: intrinsic and extrinsic.
Intrinsic motivation is defined as the doing of an activity for its inherent satisfaction rather than for some separate result. (Ryan R. Deci E. 2000) Extrinsic motivation is a theory that refers to; whenever an activity is done in order to achieve some separable outcome. (Ryan R. Deci E. 2000) I will examine if the management team are aware of this and behaving with consideration to both.
The age profile of employees in the company ranges from seventeen years old the sixty years old. Each employee is at a different stage in their lives, which requires different management techniques.
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs (Maslow 1943) is a motivational theory that claims that while people aim to satisfy basic needs, they seek to meet successively higher needs in the form of a pyramid.
The 5 levels are:
Self-actualization – these include morality, creativity, problem solving.
Esteem – these include confidence, self-esteem, achievement, respect.
Belongingness – these include love, friendship, intimacy, family.
Safety – these include security of environment, employment, resources, health,
