It is very imperative that as educator, we learn about the child as the whole child. Morrison (2012) presents this idea with the indication that we should “make the assessment process an opportunity to learn more than just a child’s acquisition of a narrow set of skills”. We should pay attention to the child’s different domains of development. Beaty (2014) teaches us through her book how to observe, record and interpret children in six major domains of development. The six major domains she mentions are “emotional, social, physical, cognitive, language, and creative”. Each of these domains is divided into specific areas that are “self-esteem; emotional competence; social competence; physical development; cognitive development; spoken language; emergent writing and reading skills; art, music and dance skills; and dramatic play skills” (p.ix). The assessment should be an ongoing process; children should be assessed through multiple methods. The sentence in our lecture from Unit 5 called my attention and I couldn’t agree with this sentence more: “It is imperative then, that teachers provide a variety of opportunities for students to demonstrate their achievement”.
