Attitudes Toward Race in “Desiree`s Baby” and in the World Today Race has been a hot topic in the world for some time now. “Désirée`s Baby” by Kate Chopin is evidence of the different attitudes toward race in the past and present (503). “Désirée`s Baby” follows Désirée, a young mother who doesn`t know her parents. Madame Valmondé and her husband adopted her as a young child (Chopin 503). In the short story, Désirée deals with the sudden distance and coldness that her once loving husband, Armand, begins showing towards her and the baby after he discovers their new baby is colored. People of color or of different ethnicities still come across people with the same views as Armand`s today. The main character, Désirée, tackles her husband`s negative manner in regards to her and her new child, who just so happens to be colored. Her husband, Armand, is acting impolite and uncivilized, because the baby is colored. Armand`s racist attitude still runs rampant today. People of different ethnicities cope with abusive and bad-mannered judgments towards them even today. There are still people on the other side of the racial spectrum though. In “Désirée`s Baby,” the reason Armand blames Désirée for their mixed child is because she was adopted as a young girl, so she doesn`t know who her parents are. Madame Valmondé shows amazing love for Désirée, and she is disinterested in race. Even after finding out the baby was colored, she took Désirée and the baby in and dedicated herself to comfortingly taking care of them. This view still exists nowadays. There are people who are racially colorblind and love people of all ethnicities in the world. Similar to everything in the world, there are good people, and there are bad
