8:00 P.M. The crowds on the beach were in a festive mood. Thousands had gathered for the big show and the Comet Roman was not disappointing. The comets colors kept shifting as the sunlight hit the giant ball of ice. It had taken on a reddish purple hue and the crowd cheered as the first of the meteorites streaked across the sky.…
Lastly, meteors soar by earth occasionally. I saw a meteor fly by when I was younger. People see these things a lot.…
Tetrahydrocannabinol in space Astrophysicists from the University of Hawaii have discovered Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) on a meteorite found in the Nevada desert in 2010. Showing that there is Marijuana and life on other planets. Researchers who analyzed the meteorite found the presence of Tetrahydrocannabinol, Which comes from the cannabis plant. Researchers are still clueless on where the meteorite came from. The discovery will have a major impact on science.…
Planets and the stars have always fascinated me. Finding out how they were discovered is fascinating. We know that William Hershcel discovered the planet Uranus in 1781. But, how did it happen? He was using his telescope to check for “’double stars’—two stars that are so close together that, without proper magnification, they look like one star”.…
19. Pluto is no longer considered a planet, and is considered a dwarf planet because it has not “cleared the neighborhood around its orbit. This saying pretty much means that Pluto has gained control of the gravity around it. So astronomers made a name for these planets known as the dwarf planets, to show that it is a planet that continues to orbit the sun, but it hasn’t cleared the neighborhood. 20.…

On April 11th, 1970, the Apollo 13 was launched from Florida’s Kennedy Space Center to complete a mission in space. Their mission was to land on the moon and explore a hill called Fra Mauro. They were to gather samples of the moon’s sandy dirt and 4-billion-year-old rocks. It would take a total of four days to get to their destination. It was April 13th, 1970, the three astronauts only needed one more day to get started with their mission.…
Following the last glacial maximum, at the end of the Pleistocene, there was a period of rapid change in the earth system (Björck, S. (2007)). This included; the onset of the younger Dryas cold reversal, which saw the return of glacial like conditions across the northern hemisphere and megafaunal extinction, where 35 genera of large mammals became extinct across North America (Firestone et al., 2007). One possible explanation for this change is the Younger Dryas Impact Hypothesis (YDIH), which proposes that an extra terrestrial (ET) object hit the earth 12,900 years ago (Firestone et al., 2007), which would have killed the megafauna near the impact zone, weakened the Laurentide ice sheet, which was covering the majority of North America, discharging…
Natalia Novoa Mrs. Paz Environmental Science G 7 September 2015 Clair Patterson Monologue Good morning. I am Clair Cameron Patterson, but you can call me Pat, like my friends do. You may know me as the first person to properly and accurately measure Earth’s age, which is 4.6 billion years old, if you didn’t know.…
The Wardaman people of northern Australia tell of Utdjungon, a being who lives in the Coalsack nebula by the Southern Cross. He will cast a fiery star to the Earth if laws and traditions are not followed. The falling star will cause the earth to shake and the trees to topple. The Luritja people of Central Australia also tell stories about a fire devil coming down from the Sun, an object that fell to Earth as punishment for breaking sacred law, crashing into Earth and killing everything in the vicinity. And we can still see the scars of this event today.…
Many cultures throughout history have referenced to distinct patterns in the sky formed by stars. These patterns have been called many things but now scientists refer to them as constellations. Often times in our society we forget what a privilege it is to have tracking tools and measuring devices but 5000 years ago they used these constellations to track time and be able to tell where they are. Constellations have been seen as specific animals or figures that are then told with myths. STILL NEED TO FINISH…
It’s amazing how the same stars we look at today are the same ones, more or less, that all humanity has gazed upon. Plato, Queen Mary, Martin Luther King—the list is endless but these great historical figures have all seen the balls of light and gas that shine in the sky tonight. That’s all they are, floating matter in a vast, unknown space we call “outer space” simply because it resides outside the front door. Space. It envelopes us like an old, soft blanket with moth bites here and stains there.…
The Earth is a part of the solar system and it has been influenced by its elements since it was formed. The solar system was formed from a large nebular cloud. This nebular cloud began to spin producing energy due to the collision between particles. The composition of these colliding particles included metal-rich fragments such as iron meteorites, rocky fragments such as stony meteorites, and icy fragments such as comets. The solar nebula grew hotter and denser, forming a disk of gas and dust at its center.…
W.E.B. Du Bois wrote The Comet with a prominent theme of successful miscegenation in order to alter the general population’s disapproval of interracial relationships during the 1920s. Using an ultimatum, the author proves to the reader that the opposing races will not be seen as equal, until the world ends- unless society comes to the realization that blacks and whites can live in harmony. As soon as the poor black man, Jim Davis, and the rich white woman, Julia, discover each other, they are faced with overcoming the stereotypes that were expressed during this time period. The differences of society’s treatment between the two races and social classes lead to the questioning of the idea of miscegenation: Is an equal relationship between a black and a…
The Positive Impacts of The Space Race Following World War II, tensions between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. rose dramatically. These tensions eventually caused the Cold War, a war that did not contain any actual combat between the two countries, but contained U.S. foreign involvement to contain communism, an arms race, and the space race (“Cold War History”). The space race is defined as the period of time in the 50s and 60s where the U.S. and Soviets competed technologically to be the first to get a man on the moon. This space age began on October 4, 1957, when the U.S.S.R. put the first artificial satellite, Sputnik, into orbit around the Earth. As the news hit the U.S. the next day, many Americans were worried that the US had become technologically…
