In a nutshell libraries exist to connect people with information. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate libraries in terms of who they serve, collections that they hold and what services are provided to their patrons. I will be discussing the similarities and differences of the following five libraries in these aspects.
Library and Archives Canada (LAC) is a Government library and it combines the holdings, services and staff of both the former National Library of Canada and the National Archives of Canada. In terms of the collection LAC holds, although there are similarities with few other libraries mentioned here, as a whole with the rest of the four libraries LAC is rather unique. LAC’s special collection comprises of Genealogy (family history databases), collection of thesis from across the country’s universities, heritage documents, Canadian literature, Canadiana( national bibliography) , Archives of Government of Canada, various documents and databases for Canadian publishing community and donations/gifts/photos by the public that has relevance to history of Canada to name a few. Unique services that are provided are providing orientation services for public that comes for research, provide in-depth research as oppose to directing to the source of the research, assistance with Citation, research with Genealogy, Cataloguing services for forthcoming Canadian publications, unique ISBN/ISMN/ISSN/Serial no’s services along with maintenance of these databases, legal deposits and be able to hire free-lance …show more content…
D’Agostino, MD medical library are medical staff, employees and in-house patients. The collections are related to the medical topics, in the formats of text books, print journals and e-journals. Also holds daily newspapers along with some audio, video, slide collections and some computers. As these special libraries employee very few staff majority of times, the services are borrowing material, reproduction of materials, inter library loan services are present with other health libraries that are part of this program and training on various computer programs that are available.
