Taking a utilitarian view on gay marriage, allowing people to marry someone of the same sex would produce more pleasure than pain, meaning that same-sex marriage is ethical and moral according to this view. Having gay friends and family has greatly influenced my opinion on this and there are several reasons I believe that it should be universally acceptable. First, I do not believe that homosexuality is a choice and therefore cannot be changed or controlled, just as heterosexual people do not choose to be heterosexual. People who are against gay marriage argue that you are not born homosexual, and that you are brought up and raised to be that way, but I disagree. I know people who are gay and their parents are strong opponents of gay marriage. I doubt that someone would raise their child to be gay if they were against same-sex marriage. They believe that gay marriage is contrary to the word of God and goes against the beliefs, sacred texts, and traditions of many religious groups. They use bible verses such as Leviticus 18:22 as evidence. It says, “Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination,” which condemns homosexual relationships. They also believe that God created Adam and Eve as the first human beings as an example to show how marriage should be in God’s eyes. All of these lead to one main reason opponents of gay marriage think it is immoral: homosexuality is a sin. Because of my personal belief that the bible contradicts itself several times, I don’t think you cannot base what is right or wrong off of what is stated there. Also, because I firmly believe that sexuality is not a choice, I don’t think a God who hates sin would intentionally create it. I believe that all sin is equal, and your sexuality does not condemn you to hell more than any other sin does.
