A tsunami is an earthquake that occurs in the ocean causing a ripple effect with the amount of force applied to the water. It is stated that many animal owners experienced strange behavior from their pets prior to the tsunami. An article from the Companion Animal Psychology website states, “included things like howling and barking (for dogs), vocalizing (for cats), trembling, being restless, and escaping” (2014, Did dogs, cats, and cows). There was also a study recorded on cow milk production. If the cows feel stressed, probably from the strange atmosphere of the stress inside the earth, they will produce less milk. The article states, “There were no changes in milk production in the time leading up to the quake. However, in Ibaraki Prefecture, the cows produced significantly less milk on 11th February, and on the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th March” (2014, Did dogs, cats, and cows). Since cow milk production dropped so significantly close to the time of the tsunami, shown in the study, animals may be the link to a very rough prediction of future earthquakes. The killing of many animals beaching themselves before the earthquake caused worry but also was not …show more content…
150 melon headed whales beached themselves on the shores in Japan and another 50 were found on several beaches six days before the tsunami. Scientists could not figure out the cause of the beaching (2015, Mass beaching). This is strange because animals beaching themselves in such large numbers usually has a cause, such as sickness or problems with navigation, but no problems were found. Oarfish are deep-water fish in Japan known as “messenger from the sea god’s palace” making them very sacred creatures. When 20 of them stranded themselves, many thought it was very strange to find this many on a coast plus they lost 20 sacred oarfish. Kiyoshi Wadatsumi told japan times, “Deep-sea fish living near the sea bottom are more sensitive to the movements of active faults than those near the surface of the sea” (Lallanilla, M, 2013). Also, before the time of the tsunami, 107 pilot whales beached themselves in New Zealand around February for an unknown reason. The disaster gets even bigger after the tsunami, for there is a nuclear spill bringing expenses for Japan to
