Thousands of years ago in the distant land of Sumeria, the people lived in peace for hundreds of years. However, in the year 2300 BCE, this time of peace came to an abrupt ending when the Akkadians, the militaristic and warlike people to the north, came down and in one powerful thrust conquered the Sumerian people. These Akkadians forever left their mark on history for two reasons: First, they were the first to ever conquer an entire civilization. Second, they were able to keep control of this vast empire.

To do this, the King Sargon used a variety of clever political strategies to force the Sumerians to obey him. First, he destroyed the city walls surrounding the cities of Sumer so that they could not rebel against him. Then, he replaced all disloyal governors with his own men to ensure the cities obeyed him. These two measures allowed him to rule over Mesopotamia for 56 years until he finally died and passed on his kingdom to his son, who ruled for another 100 years.
Overall, Sargon was able to create the first empire that the world had ever seen by using clever strategies to outwit and overpower his opponents. First, he was able to conquer all of Sumeria because he used military strategies that had never been seen by the ancient world. He then kept control by cleverly forcing obedience from all of the cities that he conquered.
