The quote I am going to use is, “I refused to fail. I was smart. I was arrogant. I was lucky.” Sherman Alexie was trying to explain in this is he refused to fail in anything. Also in this he was trying to say that he is smart and arrogant. He was arrogant and smart because he was not just trying to save his life with books but he was trying to save all the other kids inside the reservation school trying to break the education barrier between Native American students and non-native American student.

And it also said that they look at him with arrogent eyes and wonder.This means that they actually want to learn they are not like the allready sullen and defeated kids that sit in the back of class with theactrical preision.Sherman Alexie saved his life by reading books.so he is trying to do the same with the kids on the reservations lives. This is proof that books really do change
