“The Raven” by Edgar Allen Poe has a lot of different feels about it. The main idea of the story is about a man whose love of his life died and he believes is still alive. One key aspect is that Poe uses is a raven as a symbol to show him that she is gone also as a symbol of his grief, anger, sorrow, hope and a small sign of joy about the whole situation. The beginning of the poem he his sitting and reading and out of nowhere someone knocked on his door but while he was getting up to go get it he started thinking of Lenore the love of his life (“I had sought to borrow from my books surcease of sorrow-sorrow for the lost Lenore”line 9-10). He sat there and looked at it and asked the name of the raven. The raven answered with nevermore. Then he asks the bird what such name is nevermore but the bird could and would only say that one word nevermore. Through all of that he gets mad at the bird for not being Lenore and falls while the shadow of the bird lays over him. Sorrow can be a very bad thing for people, it can mess up people's lives and just how they are as a person and in this poem that is one of the key points of how Poe uses the raven as symbol. The guy in the poem is so sorrowful of the loss of his love Lenore, he believes the smallest things could be what he wants to be so bad. His sorrow is blinding him of what is real; he thought that she was whispering to him and that a bird could be his love. Which is crazy what you are not willing to accept never goes away and will never leave you, it will also cloud your judgement and mind, which could be good or bad but if it’s sorrow then it’s gonna be bad. Grief is another key point to the symbolism of the bird. Grief can be very strong and can take over someone, the way when someone dies or a bad tragedy that happens will and can change someone for the worse and very rare better. This emotion is so strong
