In Ariel’s Story, the anguished ally syndrome takes the form of shelter staff disregarding Ariel’s input and opinions and instead deciding that they know what is best for her. Ariel speaks about the apathy of these anguished allies, “I’ve learned that those people running most shelters don’t care about people at all… at most shelters, you have to keep quiet or you’ll get punished.” (86). With the cooperation of the Santa Cruz Homeless Services Center, Churches, community centers, shelters/other housing options, medical services, legal services, etc. a large list of resources will easily be formed. I propose a coalition including but not limited to: the Santa Cruz Homeless Services Center, Freedom Sleepers, Homeless Persons Legal Assistance Project, Salvation Army, and various Santa Cruz Free Clinics and Churches. Working together, this coalition will gain power formed through unity and will have the tools to make change at their disposal.
In the Monterey and San Benito counties, a Coalition of Homeless Services Providers has proposed a ten year plan to end homelessness in the Monterey and San Benito counties. Santa Cruz can adopt this plan to fit with Santa Cruz County’s needs. Since 2013 The Coalition of Homeless Services Providers has annually published a resource guide for the homeless community of Monterey and San Benito counties. The timeframe of ten years will work for my coalition to complete the long term goals I am proposing.This history of success proves what I want can be
