When Coates talks about the black body he is referring to the color the skin of African Americans. I choose to write about this topic because why do people get treated so poorly because of the color of their skin. I do not understand why it is so difficult to be able to live in unity with fellow humans regardless of color, race, beliefs, or gender. As a white male, I can’t say that I faced the kind of diversity that Coates has been taking about, but I try to put myself in his position and image how I would feel.
Some examples that Coates gives on how the black body is treated differently is when he says, “I wish to live, but how do I live free in this black body” (12). I think that Coates is trying to say is that what does he have to do to not be treated differently than everyone else and just to be excepted. When I read that Jones had been killed by the PG county police I am sure I was not the only one to assume that the shooter what white. When Coates said” The officer who killed Prince Jones was black.” (83). When he wrote this, it caught me of guard I wasn’t expecting it to be a black police officer that shot Jones.
