The practice consisted of nothing but running. One of Rake’s players, Scotty Reardon, collapsed and died of heat stroke. At that time, everyone did not think that Rake was a very good coach at all. Yes, they won a lot, but no one should have to go through what the players’ experienced. At that time, Rake got fired and they had to look for a new head football coach. Rake thinks about Scotty every day of his life. He could not believe that he let one of his players die. Rake says, “I never dreamed I would be responsible for the death of one of my players, but I accept the blame for his death. Holding him in my arms as he passed away is something I have wept over every day since” (Grisham 204). Therefore, he yearns for forgiveness from everyone that blamed him for Scotty’s death.
