Fast Drive Thru to Obesity
With more than a million deaths a year, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the US. Another issue that Americans are facing is the fact that 2/3 people in the US are overweight. Clearly there is something that is contributing to these problems and you can find it right down the street. The fast food industry has exploded over the last several years. With consumers wanting fast food more than ever, the health of the average American has greatly declined. Not only does the consumption of fast food bring along an increase of risk to diseases and health problems; it also has greatly impacted the diets of Americans. In a study, Americans living near several fast food places were monitored as well as Americans living in areas with fewer fast food places. Areas with high concentrations of fast food restaurants showed higher rates of obesity and poor health. On the other hand areas that have less fast food places tend to have better health overall. (par. 2) This isn’t good news when you factor in that the fast food industry is expanding every day and the demand for quick cheap food keeps going up. Creative marketing strategies that offer value meals result in further promotion of these industries.
