We see that through divine intervention, Dante is given a guide for his approaching journey through hell. Virgil the poet is sent to help guide him throughout his journey. On this journey, they see many different types of sins and the punishments that they receive. We see through Dante description that Hell is somewhat unsettling but justified. When we start looking at the many different circles, they are set by the crimes that are committed. Dante sets the scale from small crimes like those out of passion to large crimes that are more thought out and intentional. There may be some of the circles/crimes that we as individuals think could be switched around depending on how you view them. As Virgil leads the way down into the first circle, they hear the sighs of men, women, and infants who have not sinned but just have not been baptized. This is something Dante admits to being a part of this group. This is a group of people that I feel might be very large this day and age. We see that people believe in God but just aren’t willing to worship the way we should. The two are then down to the second circle where they will meet the first people are being punished for sin. These are the ones that let lust enter their lives and lead to them committing the sin. As they continue on the journey down the circles passing through gluttony and next on to greed, where they just pass on through without spotting to speak with anyone. I guess that greed doesn’t need must of an explanation, it is selfish people wanting more than they need. Moving on to the fifth circle dealing with anger, Dante begins to look into his own life and realizing what he has done could lead him to this type of torture. Next was heresy, where the people rejected religious and political norms. Dante encounters Farinata degli Uberti, a military leader and an aristocrat tried to win the Italian throne, convicted of heresy in 1283.
