A cat, every afternoon, waited in his backyard by the shed. He waited for the mice to run around so he can gobble them all up, but one day one of the mice got away. So the cat chased the mouse all over the yard. Up and down and, down and up until the mouse went under the house where the cat couldn't reach him. The next day the cat waited by the house and again the cat chased the same mouse and the mouse got away.…

My grandfather started out not being able to see his parents very often and living with his sister. He would walk to school 3 miles every morning and when they couldn't afford their house, they moved into the schoolhouse when it closed down. It shows that he had a rough childhood, but when he got a job and worked hard he made his way from the bottom to having a family and living in a nice house. It shows the harder you work and how much you push through it will get you where you want as long as you don't stop. The lesson I will learn and continue to carry throughout my life is through hard work you will succeed as long as you do not quit and you keep going.…

For my Story Corps project I interviewed my mom. I decided to interview my mom because I thought about how interesting it would be to find out a little bit more about her because I have known her for eighteen years and there are still many things that I don’t know about her. I learned a lot about her childhood and learned some of the many difficult things that she had to endure as a child. I also asked her if she liked going to school and learned that it was one of the things that she loved doing the most, and tried very hard to get farther in her education. My mom was really nervous and thought it was kind of awkward at the beginning…

It’s been almost two years since I walked into the Outlook office on the second floor of Jamison for the first time. No matter how many how many times I walk up those stairs, I still flash back to the first time I walked up them to drop my résumé off to Drew McCall, someone who would later become my first editor and good friend. I had a lot of doubts as I handed him that that packet of paper. “I’m a child development major,” I told myself, “Why would I work for a newspaper?” I wondered if being an armature writing enthusiast was enough to make writing words my campus job.…
When I was about 22 years old I got my first real job selling cellular phones. My family was thrilled with the idea since most of high school was spent on the phone. What I didn’t understand was the seriousness of the rules when it comes to attendance and management was serious. While the job seemed fun and everyone had a great time there were definitely rules to follow.…
In his article The Process Writing Method (2002), Daniel J. Jarvis summarizes the Process Writing approach as outlined in Gail Heald-Taylor’s book, Whole Language Strategies for ESL Students (1994). Jarvis claims that the method has played an important role in teaching throughout his career. He describes the method while providing examples from his own experience as an ESL teacher. He also demonstrates how he adapted the method by incorporating illustrations into students’ writing. Jarvis provides the reader with the basic stages of a novel approach to teaching writing.…
In “The Danger of a Single Story,” the author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichi, uses her speech and life story of growing up in Nigeria to examine stereotypes of cultures around the world. Adichie 's purpose of writing this speech was to show the dangers of a single story and how knowing only one story about an entire race of people is dangerous as it creates a negative connotation about that culture. It seems as though Adichi is presenting stereotypes to readers by explicitly describing their negatives, but actually, Adichi is uncovering the implicit dangers in stereotypes. Adichi explains how literature has the power to put danger in a single story.…
