The meaning behind my artwork is just to show importance to Amy Winehouse the same way that Andy Warhol did to a portrait of Marilyn Monroe, by duplicating her picture, painting over it and making the photo of her look like one dimensional and like a cartoon. The only difference in my artwork and Warhol’s artworks is the methods used to achieve the artwork. Warhol actually painted over silkscreen, which took a long time to do. Meanwhile, I used photoshop to make my artwork. I can only imagine that my process took much less time and effort to do, since I did not need to physically paint over anything. Most people that know of her is due to her drug problems and death. Her music was authentic to herself and style which was the genre of jazz, soul and rhythm and blues music. She had such a strong and powerful voice. Basically, I believe her artistic career was great and that more people should be familiar with. What I want people to obtain from my artwork is her uniqueness first of all. The photo I chose of her to make into my artwork shows her beauty and boldness. The pose she is showing is her hand on her hip and her face and stare looking into the distance. To me, it resembles power. By making this portrait of her into multiples, like Warhol did to many of his art, it makes her seem more important. That is exactly what I want people to gain from this artwork. I want people to see the other side of her, not just the drug addicted side that was mainly portrayed in the media during her last years of life. I want people to think why I would choose to make my artwork about Amy Winehouse, a “druggie”. Hopefully, it sparks interest in the people to want to know more about her. She was a woman with so much talent, I want people to find her music. I am pretty sure most people have forgotten of her ever since her passing in 2011. I would like it to have an effect of curiosity about her on the people that see
