Large cities tend to have an overwhelming amount of one-sided political views while the rural areas tend to have another. Another reason for the Electoral College besides the fact that we aren’t smart enough to directly elect the President is that the Electoral College accounts for the entire state’s votes. If the popular vote elected the President, the only votes that would matter are the ones from large cities and only a fraction of the state would be properly represented. This is never more apparent than in Smalltown, USA. Growing up in a small town in Iowa has pushed me towards a certain way of thinking when it comes to Presidential elections and how I view the Electoral College. I personally like the idea of an Electoral College. My vote seems as if it matters more because I am being properly represented by an Elector. If the popular vote were to take place, there would be no need for anyone who doesn’t live in a large city to vote because it wouldn’t make a difference. 63 percent of the United State’s population lives in large cities but they only comprise of four percent of the land area. That is a great representation of why the Electoral College matters to me. Another reason why I personally like the Electoral College is because I side with the Founding Fathers in that I believe that the majority of the voting population in America is not well enough educated in politics and policy to make the best informed decision possible.
