The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 protects individuals with disabilities, which are broadly defined to include physical conditions, psychological conditions, contagious diseases, substance abuse and other conditions. Disability discrimination occurs when an employer treats someone with a disability unfavorably because of the disability. Employees must be able to perform the necessary functions of a job with reasonable accommodations. Reasonable accommodations include modifications to the workplace or conditions of employment so that a worker with a disability can perform the job.
