One of the most common sequelae caused by drinking is blackouts. It is a period of amnesia when the person is fully conscious and fully aware of what they are doing but has no memories of what they did. This may last from seconds to days depending on the person and how much they drink. If blackouts happen frequently, it is a sign that it might lead to serious damage to an individual’s memory and long-term brain function. Another well-known mental issue when it comes to alcohol is depression. Adults often drink alcohol to help them deal with depression and the anxiety that they face throughout their lives. It is true that alcohol can make people relax and forget about the unhappy moments, but in the long term, alcohol also contributes to depression and anxiety which make stress even harder to deal with. Alcohol can also mentally influences an unborn child. Babies can be born with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders or Fetal Alcohol Syndrome if it is a more severe case. It is caused by heavy drinking during pregnancy. The consequences of it are that children will be born with birth defect, developmental disabilities, and behavioral problems. Through their lives, they will experience poor social skills, learning difficulties, poor memory, hyperactivity, and anxiety. Adults should consider the aftermath of their actions so unnecessary mental problems will not be passed down to those innocent children.
