The colonization of Africa was particularly remarkable. African leaders expanded its political power under European rule. In the many years that followed independence, they endeavored to shape the political, cultural and economic characteristics of the postcolonial state. Some struggled to work with and apposed the challenges of continued European cultural and political control, while others worked with European authorities in order to protect their interests and retain control over economic and political resources.
