Adolf volunteered at the age of 25 where he trained in a Bavarian Regiment becoming a message courier carrying messages from the front line back to the German command. His regiment 's first battle against the Allied powers was disastrous, with 2,500 of the 3,000 men either being killed, captured or wounded, Hitler walked away from the battle without a scratch. It wasn’t until October 7, 1916, where Hitler was first injured in the Battle of Somme, where he took a fragment of a shell to the leg requiring hospitalization back in Germany. It was here that Adolf was first introduced to the German Workers’ Party after having been assigned to investigate the group in September 1919. He attended his first meeting on September 12th, 1919 where he was disgusted with what some of the members were saying about the weakness of the German State. He stood up and gave a fifteen-minute speech against them impressing most of the Party members there, with many of them agreeing amongst themselves that they could use him and his way of speaking. After the meeting, Hitler was given a pamphlet called “My Political Awaking”, which reflected many of Hitler’s political ideas.
