The Challenger was a horrible tragedy the american public had to witness, but we as a country will not let it get in the way of our future accomplishments. The Challenger was a spacecraft that exploded on January 28, 1986 while its departure to space along with 7 crew members inside. The president of the United States, Ronald Reagan, then delivered the “Address To The Challenger Disaster” to the nation and the crew members families. Reagan crafted the speech to let everyone know they were grieving for the brave crew members but to also let them know we will not let such a disaster stop us from exploring space. It was urgent for him to make people feel better about what happened because he knew there were people devastated that we did not make it into space and families mourning over the deaths of crew members in the accident, so he knows to talk to both audiences to let them know he was with them in their time of mourning. The reason why the disaster hurt Americans so bad was because they had a spaceship explode before it had even taken off but for it to almost in space then disappear was disastrous to the American people. Reagan understands the way the American public feels because he includes himself as them not to just look like he is pretending to care but because him and his wife were truly hurt by the incident. He keeps strong as the nation's leader to set an example to others to stay strong for the ones they lost and continue to move forward. It shows that someone with such high position such as president can be affected by a disaster and shows he really cares about what happened and puts him more as everyone else because people do not see the president of the United States as a normal everyday person. One of the strongest points that he addressed was “The crew of the space shuttle Challenger honored us by the manner in which they lived their lives. We will never forget them, nor the last time we saw them — this morning, as they prepared for their journey, and waved good-bye, and 'slipped the surly bonds of earth' to 'touch the face of God.” by talking about the crew members this way makes them feel more important about their mission and gives true understanding to Reagans feelings (Reagan). It is a really emotional event for the crew members families because they lost a loved one and Reagan keeps and soft mellow tone while speaking to give some comfort to the families and also letting them know he also was in sorrow of the lost of the adventurers. Reagan explains that it was a tragic accident but they knew the risks the crew members were taking and they took the risks bravely because they did not go into the space shuttle not knowing all the diffrent things that could have gone wrong.
