For many people, rehabilitation to help stop drugs, alcoholism or smoking is a daily part of their life. The majority considers rehab very grueling and it can be hard to keep up with the tasks outlined in rehabilitation plans. Three of the most common addictions needing rehabilitation are alcohol, smoking, and drugs. All of these different addictions can lead to severe illness or death. They also can totally alter one’s mindset, resulting in a mental imbalance and potential poor decisions. Extensive research has shown that smoking causes many different diseases, including lung cancer, and emphysema, and is incredibly detrimental for one’s health. The effect smoking has on individuals, as well as the knowledge gained from the research can lead them to enter rehabilitation. There are different types of rehab for smoking; however, the following three are most prevalent: NRT or nicotine replacement therapy, varenicline, and bupropion. These three methods have both pros and cons, but in the end, intend to reduce someone’s addiction to nicotine or completely eliminate it. NRT is available in different forms: chewing gum, patches that release small amounts of nicotine in their body, or oral tablets which do the same as the gum and patch. Drugs can be very addicting, which can cause serious illnesses and even death. Options to help an individual stop using drugs includes the following three methods: sober living, counseling, and IOP. Sober living is when someone lives in a place with many other people who are also trying to stop their drug addiction and these homes are free of drugs. This environment allows people to go about their daily lives and feel the support from others. Sober living facilities also prevent people from going back to drugs. If drugs cannot be reached, then they cannot be used. Sober living conditions often last for 30-90 days. Counseling, a second drug rehab method, helps families understand what their loved one is going through. It can also help find the root cause of the drug addiction, so they can find other ways to stop using drugs. Counseling also helps repair broken relationships and can help a person practice and use their coping skills and mechanisms better. Counseling classes vary depending on the level of one’s addiction. Groups meet once a week for about two hours and in some cases, they need to meet as many as three times per week. IOP is the last type of drug rehab; it stands for intensive outpatient program. The programs allow people to continue to live at home, however they still have a huge commitment. In these programs, they focus on relapse prevention.
